Album Appreciation: The Buggles - The Age of Plastic (1980)
This may be a new feature of this site: once a month, I’ll post an under-appreciated album for you guys to listen to without any cultural bias and just enjoy the music.
Obviously the Buggles are one of the great one-hit wonders, but this album is actually kind of fantastic in a cheesy, 80s way. But if you think about it, it sounds very much like something Hot Chip could put out tomorrow.
Tracklist:
- Power
- Before
- Sugar
- After
- Before (Part 3)
[bonus tracks]:
6. Sepia [bonus track]
7. Before (Part 2) [bonus track]
8. Murphy [bonus track]
Here it is, all. She clocks in at about 34 minutes (52 with the bonus tracks) and I’m proud of her.
Getting exposure for new bands is becoming much harder. It’s more about the entertainment side of things and less about the music and authenticity.
We’re living in the Simon Cowell generation. Everyone seems to be a product of a TV show and it’s made music quite generic, which I find very frustrating.
There’s so much great stuff being produced, so it’s down to bands like us [Keane] to buck that trend and fight against the mindless, temporary pop that gets exposure now. I’m sick of putting on TV shows with a panel of crusty old judges watching people who can’t get a record deal otherwise.
"Tom Chaplin, lead singer of Keane.
Although (I believe) the quality of their music has gone down significantly since their first two albums, I couldn’t agree more with what he’s saying.

Video for “Power,” the first song off the new album…
…which is still on pace for its May 15th release. Almost all the songs are complete, so things are looking good and I’m happy with everything.
We lost Adam Yauch too soon. A music legend has passed away.
I was on the road today, so I had to hear on the radio, but I was genuinely sad when I did. I’m not much for hip-hop, but the only rap album I can say I love is “Licensed to Ill,” which is definitely getting a spin today.
I typically loathe the genre, but the Beastie Boys are a shining light in a sea of shitty hubristic, machismo, rhythmic rhyming that I find hip-hop to be.
Respect to you, Mr. Yauch.

My buddy Nate wrote this song and sings the second verse. Give it a listen and if you like, he says there’s more to come. Pretty cool stuff; has an old acoustic blues sound to it.
Watch!
Promo video for the new album that I uploaded late last night.
It also features the first audio sample of the new album, this being a shortened snippet of a song called “Power.”

My song of the moment: Belle & Sebastian - The Boy With The Arab Strap

It’s cool to see your most played songs from certain decades, and this kind of playlist and variants of it are easy to set up.
My most played songs by decade (as of 05-02-2012):
- 2010-12: Deerhunter - “Desire Lines” (52 plays)
- 2000-09: Ghostland Observatory - “Sad Sad City” (41 plays)
- 1990-99: Temple of the Dog - “Hunger Strike” (31 plays)
- 1980-89: The Cure - “Close to Me” (26 plays)
- 1970-79: Neil Young - “Heart of Gold” (25 plays)
- 1960-69: Canned Heat - “Going Up the Country” (34 plays)
- 1950-59: Johnny Cash - “I Walk The Line” (10 plays)
Taking a cue from Cameron, in March, I started to make a playlist for each month of the music I was really into. It’ll be cool to have these and look back to see what I was listening to at certain times. So anyway, here’s April’s playlist. Check out the “list” tag on my page for more lists, music and otherwise.
Rob Gordon (John Cusack) in “High Fidelity”
To an extent, truth. Also, good movie.
From my musics:
Hey guys. I made this poster to hopefully promote the album a little bit. I printed off 20 of them and hung them up on bulletin boards around the UMaine campus today.
I don’t expect anybody to take me up on this offer, but if you wouldn’t mind printing some out and putting them up around wherever you are, click the image to download the PDF, print a few, cut the tabs on the bottom so people can tear ‘em off and let me know what you did with them.
If you’re worried about sustainability and the environment and whatnot, tweet out this page, post it on facebook, “pin it” or do whatever else the kids are into nowadays.
When I made the PDF, it cut off the “m” in the url, so unless you think people will be able to infer the m, go ahead and pencil it in.
I’ll have some sort of video/audio sample of the album in the next few days, so keep an eye out for that. Thanks for reading, caring and listening.
